Doctor Universalis: Recovering the Lifework of Erich Przywara, SJ

Location: Rome Global Gateway

An international conference on the thought of the widely influential Jesuit theologian, Erich Przywara (1889-1972). Although Przywara's work has suffered neglect in English-speaking countries, principally due to a lack of translations (French, Italian and especially Latin American scholars from Chile and Argentina, have far outpaced their Anglophone counterparts), he was arguably the most brilliant and erudite philosopher of religion, interpreter of the western metaphysical tradition, and cultural critic writing in German during the first half of the twentieth century. The purpose of this conference, which will coincide with a new translation initiative, is to recover the thought of Przywara for Catholic theology, and thereby fulfill the wishes of Karl Rahner and Hans Urs von Balthasar, and perhaps the pope, too, that he be better known.
