Serena Vandi, Satura. Varietà per verità in Dante e Gadda
Satura di Serena Vandi è il primo studio comparativo di ampio respiro su Dante e Gadda ad esaminare il rapporto tra i due autori al di là dell’orizzonte del ‘plurilinguismo’ all’interno del quale si era svolta la disamina di Gianfranco Contini. L’autrice si interroga infatti sul problema del realismo dei due scrittori, individuando nella satura una categoria interpretativa attraverso cui le opere di Dante e Gadda vengono rilette a partire dagli elementi costitutivi del genere: la varietà del contenuto e della forma e l’obiettivo di svelare e rivelare la verità del reale attraverso la parola. Combinando l’analisi retorico-stilistica comparata dei testi e un approccio teorico che indaga le poetiche dei due autori Serena Vandi identifica nel nesso di varietà e verità proprio del genere satirico la missione della letteratura all’interno di una prospettiva etica che fa della parola letteraria uno strumento di conoscenza.
Serena Vandi è Powys Roberts Research Fellow in European Literature al St Hugh’s College dell’Università di Oxford dove insegna Dante e la letteratura italiana dell’Ottocento e del Novecento e dove conduce il progetto “Gadda: Fascism, Satire and Truth”. Formatasi all’Università di Bologna come allieva del Collegio Superiore, ha conseguito un dottorato in Italianistica presso l’Università di Leeds.

Satura by Serena Vandi is the first comparative study of broad scope on Dante and Gadda to examine the relationship between the two authors beyond the horizon of ‘multilingualism’ within which Gianfranco Contini had framed his study of them. Serena Vandi investigates the question of realism in both writers and reinterprets the works of Dante and Gadda, using satura as a new category. Her analysis is centred around the elements integral to the satiric genre, including the variety of content and form and the objective of unveiling and revealing the truth of reality through literature. Combining a rhetorical and stylistic analysis of texts with a theoretical approach which investigates the poetics of the two authors, Vandi focuses on the nexus of variety and truth in the satirical genre as key to understanding both Dante’s and Gadda’s ethical perspectives on the mission of literature as a form of knowledge.
Serena Vandi is Powys Roberts Research Fellow in European Literature at St Hugh’s College at the University of Oxford where she teaches Dante and Italian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, and where she works on the project “Gadda: Fascism, Satire and Truth”. After her BA and MA Degrees in Modern Italian Literature at the University of Bologna, where she was a student of the Collegio Superiore, she earned her Ph.D in Italian at the University of Leeds.
