International Conference “Human Freedom at the Test of AI and Neurosciences"

Location: Notre Dame Rome

LUMSA University and the International Doctorate in Contemporary Humanism, are the organizers, as part of the NHNAI Project (New Humanism at the Time of Neuroscience and AI), of the international conference "Human Freedom at the Test of Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience ("La libertà umana alla prova dell’intelligenza artificiale e delle neuroscienze")."

The scientific event, held in partnership with Université Catholique de Lyon, ATEM - Association de Théologiennes et de Théologiens pour l’Étude de la Morale and University of Notre Dame Rome and under the aegis of IFCU – International Federation of Catholic Universities, is scheduled from September 2-4, 2024 at LUMSA University and will conclude on September 5, 2024 at University of Notre Dame Rome.

During the 4 days of study, punctuated by 5 keynote speeches, more than 50 scholars from all over the world will present their research, delving into the challenges to human freedom that artificial intelligence and neuroscience pose in strategic areas such as healthcare, democracy, and education. Indeed, what space is left for our freedom if machines become capable of making decisions for us and if algorithms deeply interfere with our choices? What space is left for our freedom if our every choice and decision can be entirely explained in biological, physiological, even chemical terms?

The conference will open in the afternoon of Sept. 2 in the Aula Giubileo of LUMSA University (4 p.m.) with greetings from Prof. Francesco Bonini (rector of LUMSA University) and the keynote speech The problem of Freedom and today's challenges by Prof. Mario De Caro (University of Roma Tre) continuing through Sept. 4 with the other keynote speeches, also in the Aula Giubileo, by:

  • Dominique Lambert (Université de Namur) - Ethics of AI - 9 a.m. Sept. 3
  • Thierry Magnin (Université Catholique de Lille) - Christian Thought, AI and Neurosciences - 2:30 p.m. Sept. 3
  • Patricia Churchland (University of California, San Diego) - Neurosciences and the problem of Freedom - 9 a.m. Sept. 4
  • Fiorella Battaglia (University of Salento) - Education at the Time of AI and Neurosciences - 2:30 p.m. Sept. 4.

The work of the parallel sessions, in the Pia and Teatro Classrooms of the LUMSA Giubileo venue, will allow the scholars present to discuss specific topics in depth.

On Sept. 5, the concluding session of the proceedings, with the keynote speech Health at the Time of AI and Neurosciences by Prof. Laura Palazzani (LUMSA University), will be held at Notre Dame University Rome, Via Ostilia 15, Walsh Hall (9 a.m.).

The conference will use English and French as working languages. Participation is free of charge.
