The 2015 Rome Seminar, “Philology Among the Disciplines,” organized by Notre Dame professors W. Martin Bloomer, Carsten Dutt, and Brad S. Gregory and co-sponsored by Italian Studies at Notre Dame, the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study, and the Office of the Vice President for Research, is set to run from Sunday, June 14th, to Saturday, June 27th.

Noted international scholars from diverse disciplines will discuss the role and relevance of philology in its relations to archaeology, anthropology, history, art history, classics, law, philosophy, and theology. The seminar will be held in the University of Notre Dame’s Rome Global Gateway, on Via Ostilia in Rome’s beautiful San Giovanni neighborhood, a short walk from the Basilica of Saint John Lateran and just a few blocks from the Colosseum.

Participants will explore the theoretical foundations and practical benefits of philological approaches in a number of disciplines and fields of study in order to develop new insights and fresh methodological perspectives that enrich the application of philology to modern scholarship. Drawing on descriptive as well as normative questions and comparative analyses, especially as they will be applied to documents and collections in Rome and in Italy, this seminar series is designed to foster greater engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration among scholars who rely and reflect on philological knowledge.
