The University of Notre Dame Rome Global Gateway took part in the broad schedule of the Estate Romana 2021, the cultural program that the Municipality of Rome offers every summer to its citizens.

This year the Gateway partnered with Open City Roma for Viaggi nei Paraggi -Travel Nearby. The initiative took participants to travel the world while staying in Rome.

From July 20th to August 4th Viaggi nei Paraggi will make people travel from Japan to America passing through the 1950s Ostia through touristic tours, photography workshops, treasure hunts and events. These events will give attendees the opportunity to experience the journey as a discovery and knowledge of other cultures and distant places, within their own city.

Among the other partners participating to the event, key international institutions in Rome such as: the Accademia di Danimarca - Det Danske Institut i Rom, the Istituto Svizzero, the French cultural Institute Villa Medici - Villa Médicis, the Istituto Giapponese di Cultura in Roma, the Architettura Senza Frontiere Piemonte, the Ecole française de Rome, the Spazio Chirale, Architect Travels, Ostia, and Filippo Trojano.

Guided by Professor Rowland and Doctor Sbordoni, participants signing up to the Roma Americana - American Rome live tour, joined a walk in the historic heart of the city, between the Celio, the Colosseum and the Imperial Forums archaeological areas, where the vestiges of antiquity have been an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Participants together with professors Rowland and Sbordoni, let themselves be guided by the texts of some of the most important American authors who have had a privileged relationship with the Eternal City, with its architecture and works of art.

The path was marked by the pages of the writers and by the different gazes through which each of them has read and interpreted this part of the city, its monuments and its thousand-year history. Participants, in this way, grasped new suggestions by re-reading the most iconic places of Rome through the lens of American literature.
