The Rome Global Gateway will host a hybrid event on April 12, 2022 entitled “The Economic Consequences of the Ukraine War. Past and Present”

The lecture will be given by Prof. Filippo Sbrana, Ph.D., assistant professor of Economic History at the University for Foreigners of Perugia in Italy. Sbrana is author of three books and about twenty articles and contributions to collective books, editor of two special numbers of scientific journals and a member of the Community of S. Egidio in Rome.

As the war in Ukraine has been going on for over a month now and we continue to see every day in the media images of death, injuries, and enormous destruction, the economic consequences are affecting a large part of the world, starting with Europe.

“Energy prices are rising rapidly,” comments Sbrana, “sanctions imposed on Russia damage trade, millions of refugees are arriving, inflation is on the rise, there is concern about future gas supplies, new military spending is brewing.”

A summary of the events will be presented during the lecture. The economic and social consequences of the crisis will also be described, considering the historical elements that allow us to better understand what is happening.

On occasion of  “The Economic Consequences of the Ukraine War. Past and Present” and for the whole month of April, in collaboration with the Community of S. Egidio, the Rome Gateway will collect pharmaceutical products to send to Lviv, Ukraine. From there, the aid is sorted and sent to hospitals and reception centers in Ivano-Frankivsk, Kiev, Kharkiv, Poltava, Dnipro. They will also reach Bucha and Irpin, cities where mainly the elderly and disabled have remained. Here you can consult the list of pharmaceutical products requested. There is also a link for financial donations: if interested click here for additional information

This event is part of the new cross-sectional initiative called RGG Spotlight - Perspectives on Current Affairs. This initiative is aimed at providing a different perspective on socio-political issues through lectures, panel discussions, conferences, and social events. Through the partnership with local institutions, private and public universities, the Rome Gateway will add a European point of view on transatlantic topics and a north-American angle to Italo-European current affairs. The cross-cultural approach will provide the audience with a new perspective, leaving space for fruitful discussions and debates.
