Rome International Scholar Luke Hinsman shares his experience as a finance intern

Author: Tiddens, Giulia

Luke Hinsman, a junior Finance and Italian Notre Dame study abroad student from Columbus, Ohio, participated in the spring 2023 Rome International Scholars program. As part of the experience, he interned at Lonsin Capital Limited, a distressed debt fund in Via Sistina, Rome.

Thanks to this internship, Hinsman had the opportunity to gain experience in the field of financial options and its strategies in the Italian financial world. His internship was structured in two main parts.  The first one consisted of completing two Bloomberg certifications: the Bloomberg Market Concept and Bloomberg ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance).

The first covered the fundamentals of finance while the latter focused on sustainable investing and in reducing carbon emissions through investment practices. This knowledge allowed Hinsman to utilize the Bloomberg Terminal, an essential database that offers analysts access to the most recent data available in the financial market world.

The second half of the internship was more like a mentorship. Hinsman had the chance to learn directly from Marco M. Elser, fund manager and partner at Lonsin Capital, who has an extensive experience in the world of option trading and who guided him through mock trades and extremely complex options strategies.

Although the Lonsin Capital Ltd office is quite small, Hinsman had the chance to share his time with two other Italian interns with whom he would have lunch every day at the Trevi fountain, and learn more about Italian customs and traditions.

"Being able to utilize the language and learn from other Italians developed my intercultural competency,” comments Hinsman.
