Rome Summer Internship Program

Notre Dame Rome is pleased to announce its summer 2024 internship program. Internships will begin approximately between May 27 and June 3 and will continue no later than July 13 with some exceptions (see individual host site descriptions below). Students are expected to contribute 15-20 hours per week to their host site. Please note that Notre Dame Rome cannot provide housing in summer 2024.

This offer comprises the following host institutions:

Gregorian Archives Italian language skills not required, but interns will be working with Latin, Italian, French, Spanish; any knowledge of these is desirable. Requires precision and self-motivation as the work is primarily transcription of ancient text. Students will work remotely for the majority of the internship.

Biblioteca Angelica Activities may include translation from Italian to English, conducting guided tours of the library in English, participating in and helping to plan events and didactic activities, providing assistance to individuals or groups in the reading/consultation room, cataloging, digitizing materials. Intermediate Italian language competency required.

American Academy in Rome Work will be in the library (e.g., cataloging, adjusting records) and archival work (e.g., translation from Italian to English, cataloging). Italian is desirable, but not required.

CeSPI Global affairs, political science majors. Some Italian language competency is desirable. Requires self-motivation and an ability to work semi-autonomously on research projects.

Hanns Seidel Foundation Carrying out research for in-depth analysis of the dossier handled by the Hanns Seidel Italy/Vatican Foundation. Collaboration in welcoming international guests and delegations and assistance in external activities. Creation of social content (Facebook and Instagram) for the Office. Basic to intermediate Italian language skills required.

Pentastudio Associated Architects Work is in architecture, product design, or interior design. Ability to use autocad necessary; 3D modeling experience desirable, ideally Sketchup. Some basic knowledge of Italian language highly desirable.

Embassy of Mexico in Italy (internship may not begin until mid June and continue for 6 weeks) Global affairs, political science majors. Spanish language competency highly desirable; some Italian language competency desirable. Work is in various offices of the embassy.

University of Notre Dame School of Architecture Rome Studies Program Research on the Mausoleum of Hadrian and Roccabruna in Hadrian's Villa. The study of these two buildings, built by the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century CE, aims at the analysis and interpretation of archaeological remains to reconstruct original architecture. Interns will be working mostly on-site 6 hours per day in the period between May 26 and July 5, included. Excellent hand drawing skills, sense of commitment for the scope of the research and adaptation to on-site work are required. Interns will have the opportunity to learn about Roman architecture, become acquainted with mortared building techniques and develop skills in analyzing archaeological remains.

L’Arche - non-profit social enterprise (possible limited dates). Providing assistance for and participating in a cycling event in the Dolomites. The participants will be people with and without disabilities. A desire to assist people of varied abilities is necessary. Suitable physical fitness is required to cover 230 miles and over 13,000 feet height difference in one week. Upper intermediate Italian language competency is required.

Successful applicants will receive up to $6000 in Notre Dame Rome support for costs related to participation in the internship program (e.g., transportation, lodging). The duration of the internship positions should be no fewer than six weeks.
